A gunman opened fire on a Malson Corps Complex in Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon, killing multiple people before he was killed, city officials said.
“The incident has been a horrific shooting,” Mayor Tom Barrett said during a brief press conference near the venue. “More than one person has died, I believe, including the shooter.”
He said police continued to make sure the area was safe, and city officials were urging neighborhood residents to stay away, with emergency vehicles allowed.
WISN-TV reported two law enforcement sources said the gunman had employees at the complex, known as MillerCoors.
“This is a scary and frightening day for employees,” Mr Barrett said, adding that it was a “very bad day for anyone who was close to the condition.”
He said it was a “very fluid situation” as city officials would provide more details later.
Milwaukee police did not immediately respond to calls and emails seeking comment, but said on Twitter that they were responding to a “serious incident” near the Molson Corps complex.
Local television stations showed rifles on police cars and officers
The residents of the neighborhood gathered.
“I heard the sirens and came out to see what was going on,” said Shelly Jice (৫৯), who lives on 34th and State Streets. “I realized that somebody had to be killed, there was too much siren. I knew that it was different. ”
The Molson Corps said in a statement that “we had an active situation in the Milwaukee fashion and we are working closely with the Milwaukee Police Department.”
“Our top priority is to provide our employees and the police with as many updates as we can,” the agency said.
Kiandre Ford (2 27), who works in the lobby of the nearby Harley-Davidson building, said he received a phone call after alerting the company that there was an active shooter, and requested to lock down the building.
Mr Ford said, “We’ve heard from the high-ups – I don’t know what I’m going through.” “I received a call and the Harley Davidson building is now locked down.”
An official of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agency confirmed that there was an “active shooter” at the complex and said the company was helping to get a response from the Milwaukee office.
Police blocked several blocks around the complex.
New media gathered at S 35th and W State Streets. At least seven fire trucks and numerous squad cars blocked the area. A sheriff’s deputy, dressed in swat gear and holding a rifle, was seen walking toward the brewery complex.
The complex is located about three miles west of downtown in the Miller Valley in Milwaukee and includes a corporate office, a skywalk and a health and fitness center, said the Hanzinger Construction Company, which renovated the campus.
In October, the Molson Corps announced it was closing its Denver office and moving some of its work to Milwaukee, as part of Corporate restructuring plans This was expected to result in losses of 400 to 500 people throughout the company.
