WASHINGTON – The White House moved on Thursday to tighten the control of coronavirus messaging by public health officials and scientists, according to several officials familiar with the new system, instructing Vice President Mike Pence’s office to clear all statements and public appearances.
President Trump announced Wednesday evening that Mr Pence would coordinate the government’s response to the public health threat, even calling for immediate danger from the rapidly spreading virus around the world. Mr Pence was supposed to lead a meeting of the government’s coronavirus task force on Thursday.
Instead, Mr. Pence said Thursday that he was directing the United States’ efforts to combat HIV. Deborah chose El Bars. And AIDS, to act as a coronavirus response coordinator for the White House, enlisted an experienced scientist and physician to handle the possible outbreak of the virus.
The announcement from the White House was intended to show that Mr. Trump and the people around him were taking the potential threat to the health of Americans seriously. AIDS said that the president wants to keep a single point-person in touch with the governor and members of Congress and that any jockey should be cut off for power in decentralized situations.
With the announcement of Mr Pence, Dr. Berks has become the third person to be named as the coronavirus official of the administration.
Mr Trump said that “Mike is in charge, and Mike will report back to me.” Mr Pence says it will be Dr. Berks. Meanwhile, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Second Alex M. Azar is the chairman of the government’s Coronavirus Task Force.
The vice president’s first move seemed to be blocking the kind of opposition statement that prompted the administration’s response to White House officials and top public health officials. Even during his press conference on Wednesday, Mr Trump rejected the top health official’s assessment that it was inevitable that the coronavirus would spread more widely to the United States.
One of the country’s leading experts on the virus and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Disease, Dr. Anthony S. Fousi, told associates that the White House had instructed him not to say anything other than an exemption.
The White House’s new approach to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Prevention acknowledged Thursday that a California woman with coronavirus had to wait a few days before being tested for the disease because of the agency’s ban on who could test.
And despite Mr Trump’s attempt to calm the country’s anxious investors, stock markets plunged again on Thursday morning, with concerns about the potential impact of the virus on the global economy diminishing by about 2 percent. Earlier, European and Japanese stocks closed down less than 2 percent.
The president’s decision to appoint Mr Pence to lead the coronavirus response came several days later, where his colleagues jumped over whether to name the “Coronavirus Jazar” to coordinate the alphabet soup of federal health and safety agencies that could play a role in protecting the country.
Mr Trump said at his news conference that he was pleased with Mr Azar’s performance, calling it a “completely brilliant” leadership for the team. But the White House aide, led by acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, has been debating whether the administration needs a point person to face the administration’s response.
According to people familiar with the president’s remarks, the president informed some people that it was decided on Wednesday that Mr Pence was responsible for the vice president’s “nothing else to do.”
Dr. Burks has spent more than three decades on HIV / AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and world health, a White House statement said he would “coordinate its infectious disease, immunologic, vaccine research and interconnection capacity.”
Mr. Pence’s presidential election – and Dr. The decision to nominate Berks as the coordinator for the response – further undermining Mr Azar’s traditional stewardship role as the country’s top health officer in charge of managing the government’s response to the crisis. Mr Trump has told people that he considers Mr Azar a very “alarmist” about the virus.
Mr Azar denied that he had not been consulted about the decision Wednesday evening or had not been told before the announcement. He told lawyers during a House Way and Means Committee hearing on Thursday that he was informed of Mr. Pence’s election as the head of the Cornavirus Task Force, “I said,” the genius. “
Mr Pence’s aides are aware that if the response to the virus goes back days and weeks, there is a political risk to the vice president.
The Vice President’s critics quickly pointed to Mr. Pence’s record on public health issues as governor of Indiana that he was not the right person to lead the government’s response to the health crisis. Democrats have pointed out that Mr. Pence was to blame Increasing the prevalence of AIDS among drug users in the vein when he opposed calling for a clean needle exchange program would encourage more drug use.
On Thursday morning, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that he directly told Mr Pence that he had questioned his new role because of the fact that he had “slashed” the public health budget while the Indiana governor.
“I spoke to the Vice-President this morning, informing him of some of these concerns,” he said. “We have always had a very cordial relationship and I expressed to him my concern about being in this position.”
Former US Ambassador Nicki Haley, who has been touting a rally of conservative leaders on Thursday, resigned as Trump’s supporters, calling himself a potential contender for Mr Pence as the running mate for the presidential election in the 2012 re-election ticket.
“President Trump brings capitalism back,” Mrs. Haley told the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference when she began a four-day meeting. Mr Pence is expected to address the rally.
Mr Pence’s aides, however, underscored the political risks to the vice president, saying it was a good idea to give him responsibility.
“He was already actively involved,” Mr. Meadows said. “He, along with Secretary Azar, was really busy for weeks. It’s good to have someone who can join the team even though he was part of it. Their virus is technically a job for Azar and his team, but it’s important to make sure we have the right response. “
Mr Meadows alleviates concerns that being in position has left Mr Pence in an uncertain position. “I think the response will be good,” Mr Meadows said. Mr Trump and Mr Pence, he said, “are committed to making sure they get a lot of data points and communicate it efficiently.”
