At least 34 people in the United States have been infected with new coronavirus from China, federal health officials said Friday.
Thirty-three infections were detected among passengers who became ill after returning from abroad, and 20 were “evacuated” by the State Department.
Dr Nancy Masonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease, said at a national briefing that there is a possibility of further transmission between passengers and passengers in the Diamond Princess Cruise ship.
Dr. Massonnier said they may have been contacted by people infected on the ship, “they are considered at high risk of infection,” Dr.
Ten other Diamond Princess passengers tested positive in Japan, but are still not counted among the infected, as the tests have not been confirmed by the CDC. They will likely be added to the lawsuit, Dr. Masonier said.
Several Americans are critically ill with infection at Japanese hospitals. They were among the passengers aboard the Diamond Princess, which got infected after being docked in Yokohama, Japan.
As of Friday, the coronavirus has infected at least 000,000 people, the vast majority of mainland China, and killed 2,220.
“This new virus represents an enormous public health threat,” said Dr. Messnier.
